I mention in the Lounge that my beloved '12 Bird has been traded for another bike, as the cruiser ergonomics just didn't work with my lower back anymore. So a few weeks ago, I bought this one, a new, leftover 2016 Yamaha FJR1300:

Like the TBird, the stock seat was cringe-worthy after just a short time, so just received this new Sargent and got it installed last night:

So far, so good, though I do miss my Thunderbird 1600; it was a great five-year run with it, and I still maintain it's the best cruiser on the market (however long it should last). Had I the budget and garage space for both, I'd now have two bikes...but unfortunately that wasn't in the cards.

We all have reasons for riding the bike we do, and for me it's just opposite. I have had a FJR earlier model before, and I felt it was time to move on to my true love, Triumph.

Anyway, a very nice bike, and I just want to congrat you on your new bike. I rides lovely, and I hope you will be happy with it, and if not, there is always a another Triumph out there, waiting for you.....

There is for me as well. Although it's impossible to predict the tiiming of such things, my last bike -- before I get too old (degraded vision, muscle weakness, dangerously slow reflexes, whatever it will be) to ride -- will be a Triumph Bonneville...light, reliable, and a return to a first love. Well, a 'first love' of sorts...if I was to be strict about the term "first", I'd be looking more at the Honda CB1100 EX, given that all the motorycycles of my childhood and teenage years were Hondas (SL 70, XL125, XL250, and XL500). I've just always really loved and admired the Triumph brand for a variety of reasons.

I figure I have a couple decades before that's an issue, though.

Just a 3-month (or so) quick update for those who may be considering the same bike (I'm amazed by how many FJR owners I've seen/read who are coming from TBirds...apparently there is a trend that I didn't even know about (but am happy to be part of)!). After the new seat I mention above and some 1" block risers, the subtle lean-forward ergonomics are now perfect and I couldn't be happier with my '16 FJR1300. It has completely solved the cruiser-centric lower back issue that I was battling -- where the feet-forward seating position puts all of one's weight on the tailbone and the spine acts as shock absorber -- and has infused my riding with a degree of thrill that I had been missing the last couple years. The light, nimble handling, the power, the eledtronic features, etc. -- I know that I'm still in the honeymoon phase with this thing, but I just can't imagine what else I could possibly want from a bike. To top it off, much like the TBird in the cruiser class, I think the look of the thing just blows every other sport tourer out of the water. So: highly recommended if you're considering one.

Great bike. Just curious why the Trophy did not tick the boxes for you? I have a 2 friends who own FJR and I get to ride one frequently.

It's a tough choice on Sport Tourer RT, Connie, Trophy,ST1300,FJR are all amazing bikes. I personally went with the Tiger Explorer over the FJR and the Trophy for the lighter weight and admit it the Triumph name.

Sometimes think I should have purchased the FJR until I get back aboard the Tiger . (also own a Versys 1000 LT and Vulcan 650S)

Like the Concours, I found the Trophy far too large and bulky a bike. I find the FJR to be the sexy slim sibling to those two...nimble(r) and light(er), sleeker. I also just preferred the look, the styling of the FJR, to the other two, though the Concours was in running to some degree, as I do like Kawi as a brand (I had a Vulcan 900 for a few years). The Trophy, the seemingly bulkiest of the bunch, just wasn't at all in the mix, and the 1200 RT was too much money and came saddled with too many stories of mechanical issues, and my BMW dealer is too far away for hassles of that sort. The ST1300 is, of course, no longer made (and I wanted a new/newer bike), but had it been it would have been seriously considered. I'd lusted after the FJR for a few years, so the decision wasn't particularly challenging, but especially so as you can see I had definite issues with each of other bikes. The only issue I had w/ the FJR was the 5-speed tranny, and that was solved for Model Year '16.

Those FJR's are really well sorted now. I'll likely have another in the not too distant future burnt I'd have to get the riders seat customised ... as they were always a little too wide for me.

Yeah, if you compare the first photo to the second, you can see the seat was one of my first changes. That stock seat was as bad as the TBird's stock seat, if not worse...hard, flat, and angled down do that it was a constant push against the handlebars to not slide down against the tank. That's now been fixed.

Friend just picked one of these up two months ago. First thing was a new better wind screen, second thing was a new better seat.

Nice machines

Yep, got that covered, too. If you compare the first photo to the second, you can see the present version has a larger touring screen (indicated by size and the "FJR" on the edge). Those are two of the the upgrades that most riders find essential to make this a perfect bike...the third being risers to lessen the forward lean and strain on palms and wrists -- and, yes, I now have those as well (1" Genmar block risers). With those three now done, I'm good to go.

If I were to change one thing about the FJR, I'd change the black wheel rims to brushed stainless to match the engine. Not a particular fan of black rims...they don't bother me enough to worry about it, but I'd prefer otherwise. 'Course, if that's the only aesthetic thing I can nitpick (other than subjective ergonomic stuff), then that's pretty good.

Speaking of ergonomics, an FJR passed me (in my truck :). I noticed the the rider's bent leg position.... too cramped for me (typical sport tourer).

I don't have any physical limitations that require the forward controls of the cruiser, so have found that -- for me -- the bent leg position combined with arms that are more parallel on the FJR than most cruisers' slightly spread handlebar grips combine to make for a much more comfortable ergonomic position for both straightaways and, especially, cornering. And, of course, the primary reason for my change of bike -- bad lower back that couldn't take the cruiser tailbone shock-absorber position -- has been great...that slight forward lean with my legs bent beneath me changes the entire equation, so now my weight is spread over my hips and thighs rather than centered on my tailbone...no more electric shocks of pain up my spine!

Oh that riding position is excellent ... I never tired of it and could ride it all day with no problem. Perfect machine in all respects. I'm not really a cruiser kind of rider ... really don't like the feet forward scenario. That's why I only use the T/bird on rare occasions.

...but is the Other Bikes page.

While I appreciate Swagger's hyperbolic praise for my new bike, no bike is perfect, and this one's no exception (though I'd argue it's close ). But it does perfectly suit me and my needs right now, so that's just as good.

Before it's all over, I'll have another Triumph -- I see a Bonneville as my final bike (though hopefully that's still decades away), light enough to handle my aging legs but nimble and sprightly enough to appeal to the kid still in me -- and that'll be perfectly suited to my needs then. It's all about choosing the right bike at the right time.
